Limewire
Limewire is a very popular file sharing application, which has very recently spread across the file sharing community. They offer both free and paid versions, which provide a very good starting point for those wishing to get involved in sharing files.
limewire.guide
Limewire is a very popular free file sharing application, due to its interesting and easy to use interface. We will walk you through how to install it and download your first files.
We must initially start by downloading the software, to do this go to http://www.limewire.com/ and select the download of your choice. The PRO version allows for more connections and a wider search range, please support the developers and get this if you can afford it. If you go for the free one you should get a file called LimeWireWin.exe.
Run this and select your preferred language, in my case English and click Ok. A welcome message will appear to which you can click “Next”. The default destination should be fine for most people, however change it if you wish. Select “Finish” and it does the rest for you. Now wasn’t that easy.
On the initial opening you will be prompted by a screen as follows:

This has a few options, the first being your “Save Folder”, everything you download will go into this folder. The second option is the “Shared Folders” and it’s very important to get this correct. I would suggest never sharing any folders which contain personal files. The last thing we want is your bank details released on the internet. So highlight the first shared folder and select remove. This will remove any shared folders. You can now click “Add” and go to a folder you wish to share which you know has no person files. Further you can check the tick box’s to select if the folder or child files can be shared. If you are really unsure then please un-tick everything until you gain more confidence.
The second screen allows you to select some miscellaneous settings:

Network Speed: This refers to your broadband type, if you have ADSL or Cable the please pick broadband. If you are using the phone line with an old 56k modem or below then please select dial up. If you are unsure then selecting either will not do any harm.
System startup: If you think you will use limewire often then please tick this and it will start up in the background with your computer. Otherwise un-tick this box, this will free some system resources.
Content Filtering: If you check this it will automatically filter out all copyrighted files, which are tagged as being copyright. If you are worried about accidently downloading something illegally then please tick this box.
The sharing extensions screen will now pop up. This allows you to specify which types of files to share, ie audio, video, programs... I would advise leaving this unless you really wish to amend it.
Finally check the “I will not use LimeWire for copyright infringement” box. This is basically to cover themselves for users which download illegally with their software. We can finally click “Finish” and you are ready to go.
We will now have a screen that looks as follows:

Now all we have to do is type in the file name, click search, and it will search as many clients as it can for matching files. It will now provide a list of all the matching files. Each file will have a rating, the number of people with the same file, a name, type, size, speed and bitrate.
All we have to do to download the file you want is click on it once and hit the big green download arrow at the bottom of the screen. You will then see it downloading at the bottom of the screen.
Congratulations you have your first file from Limewire.
The Browse Host button allows you to look at all the other files that that particular user has, you are basically browsing that person’s computer for shared files. The stop search will just stop the list continually populating, you can hit this if you have accidently searched for the incorrect file.
There are a lot of further settings, however that should be enough to get you started.
